Solar Power System
A solar power system is the conversion of energy from sunlight into electricity either directly using photovoltaic (PV) indirectly using concentrated or combined solar power. Concentrated solar power systems use lenses or mirrors to focus large areas of sunlight into small beams. Photovoltaic cells convert light into electric current.
The components in the solar power system include:
Solar Panel
Solar panels are a key element of a solar system. Important things to consider are cost, efficiency, warranty, and type of technology. Choosing solar panels that provide efficiency and warranty provides a long-term guarantee. The two types of solar panels that are most suitable for installation are monocrystalline and polycrystalline panels. This is also the same although monocrystalline is more efficient and also slightly more expensive.
Solar Inverter
The inverter is a mechanism that converts the DC generated by the solar panels into the AC required by the home.
Inverters are of three types:
- String or centralized inverter: This is the least expensive type but also inefficient. This is because there is a potential production loss if there is shading on the roof.
- Microinverter: These inverters are more expensive and are attached to each solar panel so operation is smooth even when some panels are covered in light.
- Power optimizer: This tool is installed in each panel to optimize the DC output of each PV module which is then passed to the string inverter to be converted into AC power. These are cheaper than microinverters but slightly more expensive than string inverters.
Solar Racking
The solar panels are not directly attached to the roof. The panels are mounted on a roof-mounted rack system and angled for optimal sunlight.
Solar Performance Monitoring
To verify the PV working, the monitoring system will show how much electricity is generated per hour, per day, or per year. The system can also identify potential changes in performance.
Solar Storage
Solar batteries can be installed to store energy for later use or just overnight. The storage battery allows the PV system to operate when grid power is not available. In some communities, net measurements are available so that excess energy is sent to the grid for credit.
